The first ancient capital of Sri Lanka
Recorded as the first capital city of Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura is a UNESCO heritage site that still carries an aura of majesty from a past so royal and holistic. With many historical events happening on this rich soil, you will witness much archaeology to be mesmerized with. The most precious out of all would be Bodhi Tree Temple (The Sri Maha Bodhiya), which is the second most hallowed place in Sri Lanka, after the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy. The Bodhi Tree is a cutting from the original tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Ever since then the tree has been guarded and venerated for more than 2000 years, recording it as the oldest historically validated tree in the world. Apart from that once you are at Anuradhapura care not to miss other fascinations such as Ruwanwelisaya, The Archaeology Museum, The Folk Museum, Jetavana Dagoba, The Citadel, The Western Monasteries, Lovamahapaya, Isurumuniya Vihara, the beautiful moonstones and Tissa wewa (Tisa tank) accompanied by interesting stone carvings especially the famous Isurumuniya lovers.
