Hikkaduwa Beach

Distance from Airport: 143 km / 2 h 15 min

Did someone say beach party? No place throws a party like Hikkaduwa, which is dearly known as Hikka. Famous for partying and also inspiring a clothing brand, the city is a haven for surfers, scuba divers and snorkelers. The key attraction would be the beautiful coral reef and the marine life that surrounds it. You can observe both of these enchanting organisms either scuba diving or on glass boats while the sea breeze chill you throughout the journey.

Hikkaduwa National Marine Park
Hikkaduwa National Marine Park is among one of the three marine parks in Sri Lanka. The park extend up to Northern end of the Hikkaduwa beach and it considers as a typical shallow fringing reef with an average depth of around 5 metres (16 ft). Local and foreign tourist can visit the park by glass-bottomed during sunny day.

Seenigama Devalaya
Devalaya (Temple) is located by the Colombo - Galle main road, just before the Hikkaduwa Town. This Temple is devoted for Devol Deviyan (God Devol) and around 300 years old. But some believe that, this place is more than 1000 years old, but there is no any proven evidence. Eventhough, many visors Seenigama goes only to the devalaya in the main land the main devalaya is located in a close by island. This one can be reached only by a boat. locals used to stop here while on their way to down south. People coming various parts of island pray for the blessing of the god. Some people come to this place and do various special rituals & offerings and beg the god for punishing their enemies. Specially if some one faced a injustice, if there is no other help, they used to come here and grid chilies. This is to request the god to curse party, who has done injustice to them.

Mirissa Beach

Season: from November - May
Distance from Colombo: 177 km / 2 h 48 min

This is known to be the beach to just to lay back. Unlike Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa, Mirissa is yet to be developed in many areas. The beach is ideal for snorkelling and whale watching trips are arrange during season. It offers the visitor that peaceful time which you rarely get in a beach location.

When to go
Although blue whales have been spotted throughout the year, December and April seem to be peak months.
Avoid
As monsoon season avoid June and July. In this months the sea become very rough and water become unclear.
Time
Tours usually departs 6: 30 am and last about 2-7 hours, depending on how lone it takes to find whales.
Breakfast & Meals
As the tour start early morning, they serve you a simple but quality breakfast.
What to avoid
Avoid rogue operators or chartered fishing boats as many of these are known to harass whales, for example by boxing one animal between two boats.
Fabulous beach in the East Coast

Nilaveli Beach

Season from: June - October
Distance from Airport: 248 km / 5 h 13 min

This world famous Nilaveli beach in Sri Lanka is ideally suited for sun bathing and diving. This shallow beach goes up to half a mile into the sea. A few metres from the coast are a small rocky island good for snorkelling. This, only 8 miles from Trincomalee once possessed the chief slattern in the South- East of Sri Lanka. Be serenaded by the turquoise blue ripples of the Indian Ocean as you step on to the most coveted sands of Sri Lanka’s eastern coast. Hemmed by smooth pearl white foam that splashes onto the golden beach, the Nilaveli waves will enthrall you no end. The calm and beauty are almost therapeutic, the panoramic views are awe-inspiring and anyone who visits is guaranteed to come back for more.

Between April and October is the best time to visit the Eastern seashore, but it is always possible to pop into the sea for a swim. Amazingly it is also possible to walk into the ocean bed for hundreds of feet with the water twirling just around your waist. Those who enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing will find these glistening blue waters and the warm weather ideal as well. The beach has ample water sports facilities including fishing and sea angling. Nilaveli is ideally suited for sunbathing and diving.

Venture to the coast of Nilaveli in the wee hours of the morning to catch a glimpse of one of the most breathtaking sights you will ever see. The first rays of the sun loom behind the endless waves of the dazzling blue waves and blend perfectly to form a beautiful vista.

Pigeon Island, a foremost breeding ground for blue rock pigeons is a short boat ride away from the coastline of Nilaveli. It was pronounced a national park due to the abundance of natural wonders including being bordered by some of the best coral reefs of Sri Lanka. Nilaveli Beach is surrounded by some other attractions such as the Trincomalee harbor which is among the best natural harbours of the world, Trincomalee bay, and Swami Rock Temple, a place of worship of the Hindus. Another interesting and important site is hot spring wells in Kinniya while enjoying at Nilaveli.

You can visit the Pigeon Island Marine marine park which lies 2km off the coast of Nilaveli. This island is a paradise for those who love diving, snorkelling and sea bathing. Not only that, this isolated island is the habitat for the very rare corals and marine animals and of course during a walk around the island can observe endemic and migrant bird species.
